New indicators planned to track reading and mathematics standards

The Welsh Government have announced plans for new national literacy and numeracy indicators to provide a clearer picture of educational progress.

The proposed approach covered children from birth to 16 and included personalised assessments and qualifications data alongside broader measures. Ministers also promised clearer guidance on the sequencing of learning and on systematic synthetic phonics. The indicators were part of a wider plan due in the autumn, not evidence that attainment had already improved.

Why it matters: The public-interest test is whether comparable data makes it easier to identify pupils who need help without reducing schools to narrow performance measures.
