River Ely flood warnings lifted after flooding around Cardiff

Natural Resources Wales has withdrawn the flood warnings affecting communities along the River Ely, including St Fagans, Talbot Green, Peterston-super-Ely and Ely Bridge.

The warnings were lifted during Sunday afternoon, following flooding that affected roads and railway infrastructure.

Reports from Sunday described submerged vehicles and significant flooding around St Fagans. The full extent of property damage has not yet been established.

Latest official position: NRW’s warning service, updated at 6:49am on Monday, shows that the four River Ely flood warnings were withdrawn between 3:06pm and 4:16pm on Sunday.

This represents a substantial improvement from Sunday’s early-morning situation, although floodwater may remain in affected areas after warnings are removed. Flood Warning Wales

Why it matters: The immediate focus shifts towards recovery, identifying affected properties and roads, and assessing whether existing flood defences and drainage systems performed as expected.

There is also a longer-term question about flood resilience in communities along the Ely catchment, particularly as further extreme weather is anticipated.
