Official employment figures point to continuing Welsh labour-market pressures

The Welsh Government’s April labour-market bulletin brought together survey evidence and HMRC payroll data on employment and earnings in Wales.

The release showed that the number of employees on payroll had fallen over the preceding year, after growth in earlier post-pandemic years. Survey-based employment and unemployment figures required caution because of known limitations in Labour Force Survey estimates. The official release provides a more useful basis for discussing jobs than isolated claims about individual employers or vacancies.

Why it matters: A fuller picture should distinguish paid employment from economic inactivity, pay growth from changes in living costs, and Wales-wide changes from local labour-market differences.
