NHS Continuing Healthcare users gain a route to direct payments

The Welsh Government confirmed that regulations enabling eligible adults receiving NHS Continuing Healthcare to request direct payments would begin on 1 April.

The change extends the principle of choice and control already used in social care to some NHS-funded packages for people with complex health needs. Local health boards may make payments instead of directly commissioning particular services, subject to statutory guidance. The reform is designed to offer more flexibility, but effective access will depend on information, support and local health-board practice.

Why it matters: The important question is whether choice becomes practical for people and families managing complex care—not merely a right on paper.
