Following yesterday’s wildfire summit in Merthyr Tydfil, the First Minister published a statement setting out actions to improve Wales’s preparedness ahead of the 2027 wildfire season.
The priorities include strengthening the All-Wales Wildfire Board, creating a more coordinated national risk-monitoring approach, reviewing land management and heather-burning guidance, and drawing on international firefighting expertise.
The Government also intends to develop a register of farmers and landowners willing to make equipment available during incidents, examine firefighter health and decontamination procedures, and work with UK authorities on aerial firefighting capacity.
Why it matters: Wales experienced serious wildfires during summer 2026. These measures could influence land management, emergency service resources and the protection of vulnerable communities.
Status: Agreed priorities for further work. The statement does not establish a new national funding allocation or a timetable for completing every action.
