River Taf kerosene pollution: minister confirms investigation continues

The Welsh Government faced urgent questions over a fuel spill originating from GE Aerospace’s Nantgarw facility, which affected the River Taf.

Responding in the Senedd, Rural Resilience Minister Llyr Gruffydd confirmed that Natural Resources Wales had established that the discharge had stopped, with measures in place to prevent remaining fuel from reaching the river.

The pollutant has been identified as kerosene. An estimate of up to 25,000 litres was raised during the debate, but the minister explicitly warned that this was not a confirmed volume.

Environmental assessment and clean-up operations are continuing. The cause, full ecological impact and possible enforcement consequences remain under investigation.

Why it matters: The incident raises questions about industrial site drainage, pollution prevention, environmental monitoring and the protection of communities and wildlife along the river.
