Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.
On 21 October 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the village of Aberfan, killing 144 people, including 116 children.
The First Minister is scheduled to attend the official remembrance ceremony alongside Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams, Aberfan Trustees and community representatives.
Organisations across Wales have been invited to observe a minute’s silence at 9:15am today.
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council has also organised commemorative activities at Rhondda Heritage Park.
Why it matters: The anniversary is an important moment of national remembrance, but it also has continuing public-policy significance.
Aberfan remains central to debates about industrial accountability, the responsibilities of public authorities and the safety of disused coal tips.
The continuing programme of identifying, monitoring and remediating unstable tips provides a direct connection between the events of 1966 and present-day environmental protection.
