Prime Minister confirms UK–EU summit, with Welsh agricultural exports on the agenda

Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed in the House of Commons that the next UK–EU summit will take place in Brussels on 20 November 2026.

The UK Government will seek agreements covering food and agricultural trade, emissions trading, energy cooperation, youth mobility and immigration.

Burnham specifically highlighted restrictions affecting Welsh shellfish exports.

He said the proposed agreements could add more than £10 billion annually to the UK economy by 2040. This is a government projection, not an independently verified outcome.

Why it matters for Wales: Changes to agricultural trade arrangements could affect Welsh farming, food processing, fisheries and exporters facing additional post-Brexit costs.

The Government has not yet secured these agreements, and their eventual implications for devolved responsibilities will depend on the negotiated terms.
