Welsh Government outlines ambition to increase public contracts awarded to Welsh suppliers

The Welsh Government has outlined plans for a revised Wales Procurement Policy Statement, intended to increase the economic and social benefits generated by public spending.

The Government wants procurement to create more opportunities for Welsh businesses, particularly SMEs, while supporting employment, skills, community benefits and environmental improvements.

The proposals include examining how smaller contracts can become more accessible to local suppliers.

Why it matters: Public procurement is a major economic lever. Increasing opportunities for Welsh businesses could help retain more economic value within Wales and strengthen local supply chains.

Status: Policy development and consultation, not a binding 70% purchasing requirement. Procurement must continue to comply with applicable competition and equal-treatment rules. The Senedd debate also raised questions about the current Welsh supplier share and how progress will be measured.
