Ofcom identifies four age-check methods for proposed social media ban

Ofcom has published its assessment of how online platforms could verify whether users are aged 16 or over, ahead of the UK Government’s planned social media ban for under-16s.

The regulator identifies four potentially effective methods: photo ID matching, banking information, digital identity services and facial age estimation.

Ofcom warns that people without photographic identification could face difficulties accessing services, including some 16- and 17-year-olds who would otherwise be entitled to use them. It also acknowledges privacy concerns and the possibility of children circumventing checks.

Why it matters for Wales: The proposed UK-wide restrictions will affect young people, families, schools and digital platforms in Wales. They also raise questions about access to online news, information and educational content, alongside children’s safety.

Status: Technical regulatory assessment. The final regulations and platform requirements have not yet been settled; implementation is planned for 2027.
