Cardiff Capital Region warns Wales risks falling behind English regions

Cardiff Capital Region, representing ten South East Wales local authorities, has called for faster progress on fiscal devolution following the Glasgow economic summit.

Its chair, Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby, argues that new borrowing powers, investment mechanisms and greater financial autonomy being offered to English regions could leave Welsh regions at a competitive disadvantage.

The organisation wants Welsh institutions to have comparable tools for attracting investment, supporting businesses and creating employment.

Why it matters: The debate extends beyond powers for the Welsh Government itself. Regional bodies responsible for economic development and transport are seeking greater financial flexibility to deliver projects.

Status: A formal policy position from a regional public body, not a transfer of powers
