UK Government proposes stronger safeguards for police facial recognition

The Home Office has announced plans for new legislation governing police use of facial recognition technology.

The proposals include an independent oversight body with potential powers to stop inappropriate deployment, requirements for independent testing for discriminatory bias, and clearer rules intended to ensure live facial recognition is intelligence-led and proportionate.

Why it matters for Wales: Policing is currently a reserved matter, so changes to the legal framework could affect the four Welsh police forces. The proposals also raise questions about privacy, civil liberties, accuracy and oversight.

Status: Proposed legislation and safeguards, not a new statutory regime already in force.
