Cardiff Council’s consultation on how to finance improvements to public transport has received renewed attention following a Welsh Government Business Wales update.
A Workplace Parking Levy is the council’s preferred option. This would charge certain employers for workplace parking spaces, with revenue intended to support transport improvements.
The council argues that such a levy could provide a more reliable funding source while having less direct impact on residents than a congestion charge.
Why it matters: The proposal could affect employers, commuting costs and the funding available for Cardiff’s buses and other transport infrastructure.
Status: Consultation, not an approved levy. The consultation originally opened on 5 October and closes on 17 January 2027. Any implementation would require further decisions and an appropriate legal framework.
