Caerphilly councillors raise concerns about proposed M4 junction closures

Councillors in Caerphilly have joined opposition to options being examined for reducing congestion around Newport’s M4 Brynglas Tunnels.

Possible measures include restricting access at junctions 25 and 26 and potentially closing junction 27 at High Cross.

Caerphilly’s highways cabinet member Amanda McConnell warns that closing junction 27 could divert traffic towards junction 28 at Tredegar Park, affecting residents and commuters from Risca and surrounding communities.

A proposed council motion opposing the closures is expected to be considered by a scrutiny committee in December.

Why it matters: Changes to motorway access could affect local roads, commuting patterns, business deliveries and congestion across more than one council area.

Status: Options under investigation, not approved closures. The Welsh Government is undertaking an 18-month assessment of potential road-based solution.
