Confirmed BTV-3 cases in Wales this season
498
Official position, 29 October 2026
Wales’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Richard Irvine, has urged farmers to prepare for the 2027 bluetongue season after confirming 498 cases of bluetongue serotype 3 in Wales this season.
The disease affects susceptible livestock, including sheep and cattle. The Chief Veterinary Officer warns that infection may persist over winter and that farmers should arrange vaccination early to avoid potential shortages.
Why it matters: Bluetongue presents risks to animal welfare, farm finances and livestock productivity. A widespread outbreak could have significant consequences for Welsh agriculture, particularly sheep farming.
Farmers are legally required to report suspected cases to the Animal and Plant Health Agency
