Economy Minister Adam Price set out a new economic mission centred on narrowing Wales’s productivity gap with the rest of the UK and improving pay.
The announcement followed the change of government in May and placed economic development, skills and investment among the new administration’s priorities. Productivity is an important but incomplete measure of prosperity: workers’ earnings, the quality of jobs and differences between regions also matter. The government’s ambition required later delivery plans and measurable benchmarks.
Why it matters: Scrutiny should ask what investment will support the mission, whether benefits will extend beyond established growth centres, and how progress will be independently assessed.
