Welsh councils demand equal status for social care following Covid-19 Inquiry

The Welsh Local Government Association has called for social care to receive equal recognition, investment and workforce support alongside the NHS.

Responding to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry’s report on adult social care, the WLGA argues that emergency planning must protect care-home residents, people receiving support at home, their families and care workers.

Councils say lessons from the pandemic must inform future arrangements for infection control, workforce protection and maintaining contact between people receiving care and their families.

Why it matters: The intervention comes as the Welsh Government develops its National Care Service. It raises an important question about whether structural reform will be accompanied by sufficient funding and workforce investment.

Status: A formal position from local government, not a new funding commitment.
