Swansea Council has confirmed plans to introduce a 24-hour dockless electric bicycle hire scheme during the week beginning today.
The initial fleet will comprise 70 e-bikes, located around Swansea University campuses, the city centre and transport hubs.
The council intends to expand the scheme to 500 bicycles within its first year.
The operator will charge 20p per minute, with an additional 50p unlocking fee. The unlocking fee will be waived for the first six months, and new customers will receive three introductory 15-minute rides free.
The council says the scheme will create 18 jobs and apprenticeships.
Why it matters: The scheme could provide a practical alternative to short car journeys and improve connections between residential areas, workplaces, universities and public transport.
However, its effectiveness will depend on affordability, geographic coverage, safe cycling infrastructure and whether bicycles are available where people need them.
Status: Launch planned for this week. The 500-bicycle fleet and employment figures are projected outcomes, not completed delivery.
