Storm Austen caused widespread disruption across Wales on Friday, with strong winds damaging infrastructure and interrupting essential services.
BBC Wales reported that up to 2,000 properties had lost electricity, including more than 500 in the Cardigan area. These are reported outage figures from Friday, not a confirmed number of properties still disconnected this morning.
On Anglesey, storm damage affected work on the former marine terminal at Porth Amlwch, part of a £10.4 million regeneration project. The council warned residents to avoid the area while contractors assessed the damage.
Ferry crossings between Holyhead and Dublin were cancelled, and railway operators introduced precautionary service restrictions across Wales.
The affected rail routes included West Wales, the Heart of Wales line, the Cambrian line and the North Wales coast. Replacement buses were arranged for some journeys. MônFM
Why it matters: The storm illustrates the vulnerability of Wales’s electricity distribution network, rural railways, coastal infrastructure and strategic ferry connections.
There is a wider accountability question about whether investment in infrastructure resilience is keeping pace with increasingly disruptive weather.
Status: Confirmed disruption. The full cost of damage and the number of outstanding power outages have not yet been established.
