Questions over 34-week delay to Port Talbot steelworks electricity infrastructure

Senedd Members raised concerns about the timetable for delivering the electricity infrastructure needed for Tata Steel’s new electric arc furnace at Port Talbot.

During questions to Economy Minister Adam Price, Elyn Stephens MS reported information received from National Grid about difficult ground conditions at Margam.

According to the information she presented, the number of foundation piles required had increased from approximately 400 to 11,000, adding an estimated 34 weeks to the construction programme.

The minister confirmed ongoing discussions with Tata Steel, National Grid and the UK Government but declined to disclose the latest commercial timetable.

Why it matters: The electric arc furnace is central to the future of steel production and employment in Port Talbot. Delays to its infrastructure could affect commissioning, jobs and the wider supply chain.

Important distinction: The 34-week figure was cited by a Senedd Member based on discussions with National Grid. It is not a newly confirmed completion-date revision from Tata Steel.
