The Office for National Statistics published its October labour market release at 7am today.
The UK-wide findings indicate:
-
Employment remains broadly flat, with a slight increase in the latest quarterly employment rate.
-
Unemployment has fallen slightly in the latest quarter.
-
Payroll employment has declined, although early estimates suggest little monthly change.
-
Vacancies have experienced their largest fall since the beginning of 2026.
-
Total pay growth is at its lowest level in almost six years.
Why it matters for Wales: The slowdown in recruitment is relevant to Welsh employers, particularly smaller businesses, manufacturing, hospitality and public services. However, UK-wide figures cannot establish the position in Wales.
The corresponding Welsh labour market release is scheduled for this morning.
We will update when they’re published.
