Education Minister Anna Brychan has published an update after the Senedd approved the Second Supplementary Budget.
The statement confirms that the additional £60 million for Additional Learning Needs will support schools, local authorities, and further education during 2026–27.
| Allocation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Schools and local authorities | £56m |
| Further education | £2.5m |
| Longer-term sustainability work | £1.5m |
| Total | £60m |
The Minister says the money is intended to ease financial and operational pressures, stabilise staffing and strengthen support for learners.
The statement also reveals that, on taking office, ministers were informed that NHS Wales faced an in-year net deficit exceeding £300 million.
Why it matters: ALN is a statutory responsibility. Schools and councils must meet learners’ identified needs even when their budgets are under pressure. The additional money may help stabilise provision, but questions remain about future funding.
Status: Ministerial explanation of funding already approved earlier this week, not a second £60 million allocation. No equivalent recurring annual commitment has been confirmed.
