Consultation opens on a publicly owned Welsh energy company

The Welsh Government launched a consultation on bringing public energy functions together under a proposed national company owned by Wales.

The stated aim was to increase the proportion of renewable energy projects owned in Wales and keep more benefits in local communities and public services. The consultation did not propose that the company would immediately replace electricity suppliers or directly set household tariffs. Its shape, financing and relationship with existing bodies would depend on subsequent decisions.

Why it matters: The key questions are what assets a new company would control, where investment capital would come from and how benefits for billpayers could be demonstrated.
