The Bus Services (Wales) Bill received Royal Assent on 2 February, establishing a new framework for the planning and delivery of local bus services.
The legislation gives public authorities a stronger role in deciding what bus services are required and creates a basis for a more coordinated network. Implementation was planned to begin in south-west Wales in 2027, followed by north Wales in 2028, south-east Wales in 2029 and mid Wales in 2030. The Act did not mean all routes or timetables changed immediately.
Why it matters: Success will depend on service frequency, affordability and links with trains, particularly for communities where losing a bus can mean losing access to work or healthcare.
