UK Government restates its position on further devolution following Glasgow summit

The Wales Office published a further statement following Friday’s meeting between Prime Minister Andy Burnham and First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth.

Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock said the UK Government was offering discussions about where powers and responsibilities should sit, emphasising the importance of empowering communities beyond Cardiff Bay.

The Welsh Government has placed greater emphasis on transferring additional powers from Westminster to Wales, while also supporting a Welsh-led discussion about regional and local governance.

Why it matters: The two governments broadly support further decentralisation but differ in emphasis over which institutions should receive additional responsibilities.

Status: Confirmation of continuing discussions. No transfer of policing, justice or rail infrastructure powers has been agreed, and no new borrowing settlement has been announced.
