Storm Boelo brings further disruption after Storm Austen

Wales is experiencing a second spell of severe weather as Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for heavy rain across all 22 Welsh local authorities on Saturday. Its latest forecast indicates continued strong winds on Sunday, particularly affecting northern Wales.

The impacts are already evident across the transport network:

  • Transport for Wales suspended services between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth on Saturday evening because of the risk of seawater flooding the railway.

  • Services between Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock remain affected by severe weather, with replacement buses arranged.

  • Heart of Wales line services are also subject to cancellations and replacement transport.

  • High winds prompted a 30mph speed restriction on Britannia Bridge, together with advice affecting motorcycles and caravans.

Why it matters: Two storms in quick succession expose the vulnerability of Wales’s railways, electricity infrastructure and coastal transport routes.

The repeated disruption raises questions about the cost of weather-related closures and the adequacy of investment in climate resilience.

Status: Confirmed transport restrictions and service disruptions. Individual services may change throughout Sunday.
