EV charging sites promised business-rates relief until 2036

The Welsh Government have announced plans for a decade of full non-domestic rates relief for electric vehicle charging bays and forecourts.

The measure is intended to make charging infrastructure more attractive to investors, particularly in places currently underserved by public charge points. Councils are to be asked to use discretionary powers during 2026–27, with legislation planned for subsequent years, subject to Senedd approval. The announcement does not guarantee that chargers would be installed in every community.

Why it matters: The main test is whether rural and low-income areas gain usable, reliable charging infrastructure rather than concentrating investment in already profitable locations.
