New £10m round supports community-owned renewable energy

A third round of the Ynni Cymru capital grant scheme opened with £10 million available for local renewable energy and smart energy projects.

Eligible proposals included solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Welsh Government said earlier rounds had supported 78 projects with £22.9 million. The new money was aimed at community organisations, social enterprises, public bodies and smaller firms able to use locally generated energy to reduce costs.

Why it matters: A strong follow-up is to compare projected household and business savings with actual results, including the proportion of financial benefit retained in the community.
