New legal protections introduced for NHS staff facing disruption

New powers came into force on 19 January to address nuisance and disruptive behaviour on NHS premises in Wales, including obstruction and intimidation that interfere with care.

The changes introduced a specific offence and gave authorised NHS officers and police powers to remove people in defined circumstances. The Welsh Government stressed that the provisions do not apply to patients attending to seek treatment for themselves. Guidance was issued to NHS organisations covering authorisation, training and record-keeping.

Why it matters: Implementation will require careful safeguards so protection for workers does not unintentionally deter people in distress from seeking care.
