£1.85m fisheries fund opens for Wales’s coastal businesses

A Welsh Government funding round worth up to £1.85 million opened to fisheries, seafood and aquaculture businesses on 7 January, with applications invited until the end of March.

The scheme offered support for safety equipment, more efficient vessels, aquaculture development and business advice. It was designed to help fishing and seafood businesses improve sustainability and add value in coastal communities, rather than simply increase catch volumes. Applicants were required to use Rural Payments Wales, with independent advice also available.

Why it matters: The challenge is whether small operators can access funding as readily as larger businesses, and whether awards translate into durable jobs and environmental improvements.
