A ministerial statement published on 22 October confirms substantial disruption to rail services across North Wales from 9 January to 6 February 2027.

Planned disruption
4 weeks
For the first three weeks, rail services will be suspended between Chester and Holyhead, including the Conwy Valley line and the branch to Llandudno. During the final week, the closure will be between Llandudno Junction and Holyhead.
The work includes track renewals, drainage, station improvements and two new footbridges. Replacement buses will operate.
Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper has criticised the decision-making arrangements, arguing that Welsh ministers should have a stronger role in decisions concerning the railway network in Wales.
Why it matters: The closure will affect commuters, tourism, businesses, students and rail connections to Holyhead Port. It also provides a concrete example of the debate over devolving rail infrastructure responsibilities.
