Transport for Wales and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council have launched a public consultation on proposals to extend passenger rail services from Aberdare to Hirwaun.
The proposals include reopening the existing railway corridor and constructing two new stations at Llwydcoed and Hirwaun.
Passenger services to Hirwaun ended in 1964.
The extension would form part of future development of the South Wales Metro.
The project remains at an early stage and has not secured construction funding. Previous estimates suggested a potential cost below £50 million.
Why it matters: Reopening the line could improve access to employment, education and healthcare across the Upper Cynon Valley.
The consultation also raises questions about the wider regeneration benefits of reopening railway infrastructure in former industrial communities.
Consultation closes: 22 November 2026.
